Congratulations Mary Adams
I commend the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission for appointing its first Inuk commissioner.
Mary Adams was named last week to the commission, an independent organization aimed and preserving and protecting individual rights and human dignity in the province.
She was raised on the land near what is now the community of Rigolet and later raised a family in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. At 76 years old, she believes that poverty is a primary factor in the high rates of incarceration of Aboriginal people and has been a long time champion for them.
Mary will bring the unique Inuit world view to her work with the Human Rights Commission, and her experiences growing up “on the land,” where discussion and reconciliation were the primary method of conflict or dispute resolution, will, we are sure, have a lasting and positive impact on how the commission’s work.
Congratulations Mary, you join a growing list of Inuit who are making a difference.
