New Construction At 24 Sussex

In December I emceed and hosted along with ITK staff the Taste of the Arctic fund raiser at the National Gallery of Canada. Laureen Harper the Prime Minister’s wife was one of our special guests in attendance during this important milestone event for all of Inuit of Canada. She approached me with enthusiasm seeking who might be able to make her an igloo at 24 Sussex Drive.

According to MacLean’s Magazine the Prime Minister’s wife, and a few of her friends, helped David Serkoak construct a small igloo that she plans to outfit with seal and caribou skins and a small dog sled.

It is good to see Canada and Canadians taking this sort of interest in our culture and cultural symbols. It will, I hope, help to generate interest in, and awareness of our people, our culture, and some of the issues we face.

This month an Inuit community – Iqaluit - was host to an international finance meeting, we have the inuksuk at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and now there is an igloo at the Prime Ministers official residence in Ottawa. -What, I wonder, will we see next, and where will it be?
