Congratulations Savannah Issaluk
During a recent Canada wide science fair held in Peterborough, Ontario, Savannah Issaluk from the Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet received a bronze medal. It was in the Senior Physical and Mathematical Sciences Division for her project, "Size Does Matter: A Study in Qamutiik Lengths".
The cash prize associated with the project is $300.00 plus a $1,000.00 entrance scholarship to the University of Western Ontario. For those who may not know of Chesterfield Inlet, it is located on the western shore of Hudson’s Bay and is one of the oldest communities in Nunavut. At the last census (2006) its population was 332. Inuit refer to the community by it's Inuktitut name which is Igluligaarjuk - "place with few houses".
Igluligaarjuk has a long and rich history, the inlet that bears its' name was once used as a summer settlement by the ancestors of modern Inuit, the Thule people. Fom the mid-1800's whalers who depended on Inuit hunters to tend the boats, regularly visited the area. They often spent the winters there, and until the 1950s it was a major Arctic centre.
The hard work that obviously went into a bronze medal at a national level competition is a credit to both Savannah and the Victor Sammurtok School. Congratulations Savannah, we are all very proud of you.
