On the Passing of Mary Adams

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Adams. My condolences go to all her family members and to Nunatsiavut. She will be missed.

Mary was a strong representative for Inuit and dedicated her work to Inuit justice issues. Less than a year ago, she was appointed to the Newfoundland and Labrador Human Rights Commission. She was the first Inuk to hold that seat within the Nunatsiavut region.

In addition to her long service as a court interpreter and a vocal advocate for the rights of women and prisoners, Mary also served on the Provincial Legal Aid Commission. She was also a former Canadian Chairperson of the Inuit Circompolar Council International Inuit Elders Council.

With the passing of Mary Adams Inuit have lost a valued member of our community and a tireless advocate.
