Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ) At Acadia University
On March 31st, as part of "2010: Year of the Inuit" students from a political science class at Acadia University will be holding an awareness raising event titled "Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (IQ)".
At the event they will be highlighting four specific Inuit issues
- homelessness
- climate change
- hunger, and;
- intergenerational grief
During this one day event the University will launch what they describe as the first ever interactive online film (www.InuitQ.com). They will learn about Inuit knowledge systems and ways of being from an Inuit elder. They also plan to host a round table discussion on Inuit issues titled "2010: Year of the Inuit... Whither the Next 10 Years". Finally, they plan to hold a "Camp Out for Change" - a "call on the federal government to live up to its commitments and tackle homelessness and hunger facing many Inuit across Canada".
I am both pleased and appreciative to see youth at Acadia taking it upon themselves to host an awareness raising event of this nature as part of 2010: Year of the Inuit. They will through their discussions, learn more about Inuit and Inuit knowledge systems.
The North Poll, commissioned as one of the initial Year of the Inuit activities, told us that 74% of Canadians want to know more about the Inuit way of life. The activities planned at Acadia this week are proof of that, and tell us that our work is making an impact.
