Congratulations Uncle Jim
Many times when we think of Inuit artists we think of carvers, print makers, or throat singers and drum dancers. Today however we have the opportunity to congratulate and celebrate a different kind of artist, a photographer known affectionately by his community of Makkovik in Nunatsiavut as "Uncle Jim".
James Anderson has been capturing images of daily life and special events in Makkovik since he was a teenager, and this month that contribution to his community and his region was recognized at the 24th annual Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Arts Awards and Gala in St. John's where he was the recipient of the "Rogers Arts Achievement Award".
This is not the first time that Jim's work has been honoured, last year an exhibition titled "James Anderson: Over 50 Years of Taking Pictures" that included many audio recordings as well as his pictures was shown at The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery and Museum in St. John's.
Congratulations Uncle Jim, your contribution to capturing the history of Makkovik and its' people is valued and appreciated by all Inuit.
