Inuktitut Magazine Celebrates the Puvirnituq Snow Festival in Photos

At ITK every time a new issue of Inuktitut Magazine comes out, it’s a celebration! In the Fall 2009 edition of the magazine our cover story literally celebrates snow! The Puvirnituq Snow Festival to be precise. It’s a place where snow and ice are transformed into fabulous sculptures. This is best told using photography, and it is our Through The Lens feature.

Elsewhere in the magazine we have a feature story on Canada’s Minister of Health, Leona Aglukkaq – our first Inuk Cabinet Minister, written by ITK’s newest communicator – Patricia D’Souza.

William Tagoona – a CBC legend in his own right – has put down his microphone for a while and taken up his pen to write a profile of fellow musician Charlie Adams – the Elvis of the Arctic. In a moving tribute William recounts the life of a legendary Inuit singer-songwriter. Charlie gave us many memorable songs, making listeners feel “good to be alive”.

Zebedee Nungak will leave readers laughing – as usual – with a column listing 125 things Inuit like. Luckily for us, Inuktitut Magazine made the grade. We are number 49 on the list! Nunavik artist Sammy Kudluk contributed illustrations for the list to end all lists.

In her column Taima, Mary Simon reflects on the concept “Inuit Nunangat” and what it means to the four Inuit regions.

These stories and more are included in this season’s edition of Inuktitut Magazine, distributed to Inuit households across the Arctic. It will arrive at the post office soon. In Iqaluit, Inuit readers will find it at Arctic Ventures. In Happy Valley-Goose Bay you can pick up a copy from the Community Liaison Officer.
