President's Statement
National Inuit Leader Mary Simon, president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Comments on the Actions of an Individual who Assaulted DFO Minister Gail Shea at a Public Appearance
Submitted by hendrie on Monday, January 25, 2010
"I can only assume these are the actions of an individual protester connected to the anti-sealing lobby. It is a sad day in Canada when a Cabinet Minister is subjected to such treatment. What a lesson for our children! Canada is known and respected as one of the best countries in the world in which to reside; in large measure I suspect because we approach debate on emotional issues such as this in a civil manner; not a violent manner. That is the stuff of extremists and it has no place in my country. I can only wish this misguided individual had diverted the cost of the pie to Haiti relief instead. I have no doubt the Minister will not abandon her support for doing what is right and continue to support sealers; the sealing industry and the right of sealers to make a living - just as we do not protest this individual from making a living."
