President's Statement
National Inuit Leader Mary Simon Will be Pleased to Choose Seal Meat at the Parliamentary Restaurant
Submitted by hendrie on Wednesday, November 18, 2009
I was thrilled to learn yesterday that the Parliamentary Restaurant has put seal meat on the menu. This is a highly symbolic gesture that illustrates support for the seal hunting traditions Inuit have been carrying out for thousands of years. I hope all parliamentarians will choose this item on the menu. I am reminded of the gesture of support Governor General Michaelle Jean demonstrated earlier this year while visiting the Arctic in eating seal meat at a community feast. I will be at a community feast this evening in Iqaluit and will have a chance to eat seal meat again.
While members of the general public need an invitation from parliamentarians to dine at the parliamentary restaurant, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami will be presenting A Taste of The Arctic – An Evening Celebrating Inuit Culture on January 14, 2010 at the National Gallery of Canada, and seal meat will be on our menu as well.
