Discover the Arctic and Change Your Life - ITK and Students on Ice Team up to Provide Arctic Scholarships
Monday March 8, 2010 – Ottawa, Ontario – National Inuit leader Mary Simon, President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Geoff Green, Executive Director of Students on Ice, and International Polar Year (IPY) are pleased to announce the launch of Arctic Expedition Scholarships for high school students across Canada to take up the challenge of a lifetime on board the summer 2010 Students on Ice Arctic Youth Expedition.
“During the Year of the Inuit, this is an excellent opportunity for young people to get engaged with this planet,” said Mary Simon. “I was on the expedition in 2008 and highly recommend it for youth who want to make a difference with their lives. If you are interested in subjects like climate change, the environment, sciences, culture, or just plain love adventure and enjoy meeting people from around the world, don’t hesitate, go to the website and apply!”
Students on Ice Founder and Executive Director Geoff Green promises the selected participants an unforgettable experience. “This is the tenth anniversary of Students on Ice. You’ll be joining a growing alumni network of students from around the world who have experienced the Arctic first-hand. This experience will change your life,” said Green. “The Polar Regions are the cornerstones of the global ecosystem and health barometers of Planet Earth. Never before has there been a more important time for youth to learn about these places and make a difference by sharing their perspective.”
The Government of Canada Program for the International Polar Year, Students on Ice, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, First Air and the Canadian Museum of Nature, have partnered to offer over a dozen fully-funded positions on the upcoming Students on Ice Arctic Youth Expedition scheduled for August 4-20, 2010. Canadian students interested in participating in this year’s program are encouraged to obtain a copy of the scholarship application form from either the 2010 Year of the Inuit website at www.inuit2010.ca, or the Students on Ice website at www.studentsonice.com.
