Mary Simon to be Acclaimed as ITK President for Second Three Year Term
Ottawa – Friday May 15, 2009 – Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK), the national Inuit association representing the Inuit of Canada, announces that Mary Simon will be acclaimed as President for a second three year term following the ITK Annual General Meeting in Nain, Nunatsiavut (Labrador) on June 10, 2009.
Mary Simon from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik, was nominated by Makivik Corporation for the position of President during this year’s election. She has been uncontested in this election, and will thus be acclaimed by the voting delegates attending the ITK Annual General Meeting this June.
Ms. Simon was first elected President of ITK in 2006. She has an extensive background in Inuit leadership positions at the national and international levels. Ms.Simon has also held Ambassadorial positions with the Canadian Government. She has been appointed to the Order of Canada and has been awarded Honourary Doctorate of Law Degrees from five Canadian Universities.
