National Inuit Youth Meet to Revitalize National Organization

March 27, 2009 – Ottawa, Ontario - Inuit youth met in Ottawa recently to bring new energy and vision to the National Inuit Youth Council (NIYC). Youth from Inuit Nunaat met at the ITK offices from March 9-13, 2009 to discuss strengthening the council’s foundation and membership.

“The NIYC members left the meetings feeling really excited about what is to come - a fresh start along with the great support and enthusiasm from ITK’s Socio-Economic Department to make NIYC stronger and more consistent with the work that we do,” said Acting President Jesse Mike. “We as Inuit youth share a lot of the same goals and hopes, and with that NIYC provide a forum for youth to discuss priorities, issues, and what works for youth in the different regions.”

Among the decisions made during the meeting, NIYC decided on a new process for selecting their President, updating their website, creating a new logo and planning for the next youth summit. “As young Inuit leaders, we are taking this opportunity to work with a new process that we feel will best benefit Inuit youth and encourage young people to work together and give them the tools to start leading now, whether it’s at the community level or the national level.”
