2009 Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami Annual General Meeting Held in Nain, Nunatsiavut
The newly minted Government of Nunatsiavut played host to the 2009 ITK Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Nain. The meeting was held in the former Labrador Inuit Association board room. ITK held an AGM there in 2005.
Highlights from the two days of meetings - a Board of Directors meeting followed by the AGM – included discussions on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the N1H1 flu pandemic, the Food Mail Program, Polar Bear Research, the European Union Ban on Seal Products, the Inuit Knowledge Centre, and the state of national politics in Canada.
The 2008-2009 ITK Annual Report contains a summary of the issues ITK is active on, and which were, substantially, matters for discussion at the BOD and AGM meetings. The report is available in Inuktitut, English, and French on this website.
Five resolutions were passed at the AGM. They were on the H1N1 flu virus, Truth & Reconciliation Commission, Polar Bear Research, Inuit as specific aboriginal peoples, and the education committee. These resolutions are available at the link below.
At a community feast held in the Jens Haven gymnasium on the evening of June 10, 2009, ITK also honoured Inuit for outstanding achievement in five fields.
