First Inuk Graduate of McGill University Passes Away

On October 31st, 1982 Evie Ikidluak, the first Inuk graduate of McGill University, passed away. At the time she was Director of Education Services and Deputy Director General of the Kativik School Board.

She received her Bachelor of Education Degree from McGill University in 1971.

Prior to joining the school board Ikidluak lectured in the McGill Faculty of Education Program, taught in Povungnituk, worked as Curriculum Co-Ordinator for the department of Indian & Northern Affairs and trained Inuit teachers at the University du Quebec in Chicoutimi. In 1978 she joined the school board as a student counsellor, assumed the position of Data Co-Ordinator for TIKI (an organization dedicated to the preservation of Inuit culture) two years later. In 1981 she headed up the newly formed Inuit Language & Culture Department of the Kativik School Board.
