First Meeting Of ICC Communication & Broadcasting Committee
The first meeting of the Communication and Broadcasting Committee of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference (ICC) was held in Montreal June 3-8, 1982
The meeting marked the first joint conference of Inuit communicators and broadcasters from Alaska, Canada, and Greenland to discuss the communication systems of each country, and to recommend expansion of the systems to meet the needs of all circumpolar Inuit.
At the meeting representing Greenland were: Peter Frederik Rosing, Director of the Greenland Radio; Henrietta Rasmussen a journalist for Greenland Radio; from Alaska Tom Richards Jr, A.V.C.P. INC.; Peter Twichell from Radio KYUK Alaska. Canada was represented by Josipi Padlayat, President Inuit Broadcasting
Corporation; and William Tagoona , Makivik Communications.
As part of the meeting the committee visited Teleglobe and CBC where a demonstration of their computer systems and applications in the field was given. The committee also met with the Department of Communications in Ottawa to learn more about Teledon, a computer system developed by the department.
During the conference the representatives of each country gave presentations on the communication systems in their respective countries as they relate to Inuit.
Various resolutions were passed, one of the important ones being a call to establish a daily Inuit news Service for the three countries.
For subsequent ICC meetings it was agreed that all possible lines of communications should be opened so that Inuit unable to attend would be more aware of the issues under discussion.
