Inuit Condemn Government Handling of the Polaris Project of Arvik Mines
Event Date:
Tuesday, November 13, 1979 ITC statement: “ITC has many questions about the Arvik project, but we have been denied any opportunity to discuss them. The Minister has refused to provide us with any information.”
ITC and the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee called upon the Minister who was appearing before the Standing Committee on Indian and Northern Development to make the following commitments
- To consult with local Inuit communities, their regional organizations, and the ITC before further action was taken on the Arvik mine.
- To have government undertake or require the company to undertake up-to-date social, environmental, and economic studies on the impact of the mine on the region, and to make that information public.
- To hold public hearings on the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the mine on the region, and
- To take no further action on Arvik until the Lancaster Sound green paper was completed
The attached news/information article outlines a number of bluntly stated concerns with previous processes and practices regarding mining in the Arctic
