Inuit Qaujisarvingat: The Inuit Knowledge Centre
Vision Statement: Advancing Inuit knowledge for sustainable Arctic science and policy.
Inuit Qaujisarvingat was created to ensure Inuit and Inuit knowledge play an active role in research and policy development within a national and international context. Inuit Qaujisarvingat recognizes the importance of promoting and facilitating knowledge exchange between Inuit and western science. Bridging the gap between Inuit knowledge and western knowledge will allow for the generation of innovative knowledge that will in turn improve research, science and policy decision-making throughout Inuit Nunangat.
Some of the projects currently underway include:
Inuit Health Statisitcs: The Naasautit project organizes Inuit-specific statistics and presents these in ways that are easy for researchers to understand and use. It was created to make statistics readily available to the regional Inuit organizations and communities. By making statistics easier to find and use, Naasautit helps build the capacity for Inuit organizations and communities to conduct their own research, analysis, and advocacy.
Climate Change Literature Review: Finding all the information which exists about climate change adaptation across the Inuit regions and reviewing what is known. With a good understanding of how climate change is impacting Inuit, we can help to determine what are enablers and which factors are barriers to climate change adaptation. This report is intended to provide insight to help Inuit proceed as further impacts of climate change will be felt.
Rights and Consent: Inuit Qaujisarvingat: the Inuit Knowledge Centre is working with the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre and the Exchange for Local Observations and Knowledge of the Arctic to research and document issues of rights and consent as they pertain to local and traditional knowledge in northern communities. Another goal is to develop a credit-based course with Arctic College.
