Inuit Reaffirm The Rght to Decide Their Future in Canada
Event Date:
Tuesday, October 24, 1995 In a letter to [then] Prime Minister Chretien and [then] Premier of Quebec Jacques Parizeau ITC president Rosemarie Kuptana reaffirmed Inuit right to decide their future with respect to the October 30, 1995 Quebec sovereignty referendum.
In that letter she stated
“.... there are three critical referendums taking place in October; a Quebec, a Cree and an Inuit referendum. As a people with an equal right to self-determination, Inuit will hold our own referendum to determine the future of Nuanvik prior to the Quebec referendum on October 30, 1995. As aboriginal peoples of Canada, we have the right to remain in Canada and cannot be ejected against our will. Inuit have as much right to choose our future as Quebecers and we will do so.”
