On October 20, 1982 Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada. She had been made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1967.

Ashevak’s “Enchanted Owl” print was used by Canada Post on a stamp  in 1970 commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the Northwest Territories, and her print “Return of the Sun” was used on a seventeen cent stamp as part of an Inuit stamp series in 1980. In 1973 Ashevak was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has been awarded honorary doctorates from Queens University and the University of Toronto, and in 2001 was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
