Labrador Inuit Association Formed

The second regional Inuit Association in Canada was established in Nain, Labrador, at a meeting of Inuit leaders held October 1 and 2,1973.
Representatives from the communities of Happy Valley, Goose Bay, Makkovik, Hopedale, and Nain elected nine members to serve as the Board of Direcotors for the Labrador Inuit Association (LIA).

- Gustav Boas - 2nd Vice President (Hopedale)
- Mary Anderson - Secretary (Nain)
- George Ford - Treasurer (Happy Valley)
- Abraham Kojak - Director (Nain)
- Edward Flowers - Director (Nain)
- Philip Hunter - Director (from Hopedale)
- Boas Jararuse - Director (Makkovik)
In addition to electing a Board of Directors the delegates established a seven point document outlining the aims and objectives of the organization.
The criteria for membership in the organization were that a person must:
- be 18 years of age
- be a permanent resident of Labrador
- speak the Inuit language fluently
Tose who did not meet those criteria were eligable for associate membership without voting privlidges.
