Supply Ship Nascopie Sinks off Cape Dorset

Event Date:
Monday, July 21, 1947
HMS Nascopie, bow down in the water near Cape Dorset

Fitted with an ice breaking bow The R.M.S. Nascopie was a steamship built in England and first launched on December 7, 1911. She sank off the coast of Baffin Island near Cape Dorset on July 21, 1947. At the time the Nascopie was the principle sea-lift resupply vessel used by the Hudsons Bay Company.

Upon hearing that the ship had run aground, and fearing that there would be a shortage of winter supplies as a result, Inuit from near Inukjuak went by boat to Cape Dorset where, they had been told, Inuit were attempting to salvage as much of the cargo as possible. By the time they arrived the Nascopie had broken in half in a storm.

With their boats loaded with as much salvaged cargo as possible they returned to their communities.
