National Inuit President Mary Simon Responds to MP Motion on Wearing Sealskin at the Olympics
“I applaud our Members of Parliament for passing a motion regarding the wearing of sealskin in Vancouver. Last Canada Day I wore sealskin and asked all Canadians to wear sealskin in support of Inuit sealing practices. I will be advocating for sealskin to be worn in Vancouver during the Olympics by Canadians, and visitors from around the world in support of our Inuit culture and lifestyle. The Inukshuk is a symbol of the games. In sporting terms, let’s ‘follow-through’ and support Inuit ‘all the way’. That includes our culture, and our culture includes seal hunting!”
