Urban Inuit are gaining a strong voice in southern Canada and in this issue of Inuktitut magazine we feature some of those voices.
In this winter edition we welcome the creation of Nunavik Sivunitsavut – the one-year post-secondary program that just began in Montreal. And Tungasuvvingat Inuit in Ottawa is celebrated for its longevity – it just had its 30th anniversary party this past fall.
Featured is the Embassy of Imagination-led initiative that gave Cape Dorset youth space to paint enormous murals in urban areas such as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.
You can also read about Inuinnait culture exhibited at the Northern Voices Gallery at the Museum of Nature in Ottawa and about Nunavut Sivuniksavut students, also in Ottawa, celebrating life at the 15th World Suicide Prevention Day.
Finally, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed writes about the important role southern Inuit organizations play and the pride urban Inuit have in their culture.
