For the Community of Aklavik, from the Aklavik Hunters and Trappers Committee, we get funding from the Northwest Territories Government for Community Harvesters – and with this funding we do everything from community hunts to helping local harvesters with gas to help them harvest for their families. Or we can apply to other organizations for funding for caribou hunts, or to try and do community events out on the land, such as berry picking or youth camps.
Some events are harder to do as the cost of gas is so expensive or the wildlife is not close to community like it used to be. Have to go longer ways out to harvest.
Everyone always shares their harvest when they can.
In every aspect. It is of prime importance of each harvest time as we need to incorporate traditional knowledge so it can be shared and documented for the future.
